Ulysse Nardin Marine Torpilleur Monaco Yacht Show

A stunning custom version of the Marine Torpilleur, created exclusively for MYS, with a Grand Feu enamel dial.

Ulysse Nardin has unveiled a new Marine Torpilleur replica luxury watches to coincide with the annual Monaco Yacht Show (MYS). Known as the most prestigious superyacht show (to give you an idea of the kind of crowd it attracts, MYS offers helicopter transfers), Ulysse Nardin will be sailing into Port Hercules for the event with a limited edition Marine Torpilleur watch. Taking advantage of this high-profile event and the luxury lovers it attracts, Ulysse Nardin has unveiled its latest Marine Torpilleur Monaco Yacht Show Limited Edition. Essentially the same Torpilleur model introduced in 2017, with the case and chronometer-certified movement, the novelties are the Grand Feu enamel dial and the MYS-related inscriptions.

Marine Torpilleur
Torpedo boats were small, fast boats that were introduced in the late 19th century to transport and deploy torpedoes to attack warships. Equipped with the latest technology of the time, their speed and maneuverability posed a real threat to larger, well-armed and bulky warships – what in today’s context would be called Fast Attack Craft (FACs). When Ulysse Nardin relaunched its Marine Torpilleur in 2017, the idea was to produce a slimmer, lighter version of the iconic Marine watch, and to appeal to a new generation of high quality watches replica buyers at a lower price.

Given the United’s strong connection to the sea (by the 1870s, it supplied precision marine deck chronometers to more than 50 navies and international shipping companies), the brand’s reputation for advanced technology (a precursor to the silicon escapement), and the slimmer, lighter profile, you can understand where the Marine Torpilleur’s name came from.

In-house Grand Feu Dial
This Torpilleur watch features an enamel dial with an inscription relating to MYS. Ulysse Nardin is one of the few manufacturers that makes its own dials. Determined to carry out as much of the watchmaking process in-house as possible, Ulysse Nardin acquired Donzé Cadrans, a family-owned company specialising in the production of enamel dials, in 2011. Donzé Cadrans is one of the few remaining specialists in enamel dials and no amount of modern technology can replace the talent of its artisans, who are trained in the workshops. replica Audemars Piguet watches

The beauty of an enamel dial lies in the depth of its colour and its resilience to the erosion of time. It’s hard to describe in words, but if you’ve ever visited a watch museum and seen a dial painted in enamel over 200 years ago, you’ll agree that the colours remain as intense as if they were painted yesterday. Grand Feu enamelling is one of the most difficult enamelling techniques to master, but offers the highest durability, ensuring that the colours will not fade over time. The high mineral content of the material also makes the dial impervious to UV rays.

Enameling is a fickle craft, and many things can go wrong during the firing process. The Grand Feu firing technique is done entirely by hand from start to finish. The enamel (white and grey in the case of the Marine Torpilleur Monaco) is sprinkled on a copper base and then fired at a temperature of around 800°C. During the firing process, the enamel liquefies and bonds to the metal surface. However, the metal can warp, the surface can crack, and bubbles or gases can come out and blister the surface. Even the most talented enamellers cannot predict the end result, so the scrap rate is high. Once the dial is flawless, the hour markers and inscriptions are placed on the dial using enamel powder dye, and then it is placed in the kiln for another round of firing. To ensure that the new enamel layer is fused to the same level as the dial surface, it is smoothed with a piece of carbon. replica Breitling CHRONOMAT B01 NFL

Placing a piece of black carbon on the freshly fired white dial requires extraordinary skill to ensure that the carbon does not leave marks on the enamel. Given the organic nature of the entire process, the diameter of the dial had to be adjusted to fit the case. Two subdials also had to be cut out of a blank enamel disc and then hand-chamfered before the grey enamel power reserve and small seconds discs with red and blue inscriptions could be soldered to the white dial.

Classic marine chronometer layout
Thanks to the 2017 facelift, the stainless steel case has a diameter of 42 mm and features a fixed, thin fluted bezel and a thin flange that surrounds the dial. Compared to previous models, the watch has a thinner profile and lighter and shorter lugs, which helps the watch sit more comfortably on the wrist. The steel case features contrasting polished and brushed surfaces, the crown is screw-down, and the case is water-resistant to 50 meters.

The layout of the dial elements recalls that of a traditional marine chronometer, similar to those made by Ulysse Nardin in the 19th century. Like the marine chronometers of yesteryear, the classic dial features bold, elongated Roman numerals (in blue) and a railway-style minute track for the minutes. A subdial below the 12 o'clock numeral displays the power reserve indicator and is vertically balanced by the larger small seconds subdial at 6 o'clock with an additional date window. Both enamel subdials are light grey with red markings for the Bas/Haut indication for the power reserve and the numerals 09.19 and the inscription Monaco Yacht Show, in honor of the date 2019 MYS. Going a step further, the numerals 25, 26, 27 and 28 that appear in the date window are in red, in honor of the date 2019 MYS. replica Jacob & Co Epic x

The delicate pear-shaped hands are silver, matching the case and stand out against the white enamel background despite the classic design without lume. I love the way the minute hand extends all the way to the markings on the railway track track. The small seconds hand is in blued steel.

Flipping the watch over, you’ll see the in-house UN-118 movement, a COSC-certified automatic movement with a 60-hour power reserve. As you might have guessed, the rotor is anchor-shaped (in fact, if you look closely, you’ll count 4 anchors) and has a strange but beautiful finish, as if someone had scraped it by hand with a sharp tool. The bridges are embellished with circular Geneva stripes, and you may spot a small blue engraving that reads “Ulysse Nardin Certified.” This refers to the additional chronometer tests designed by Ulysse Nardin, which this watch has passed. The chronometer standards are stricter than the COSC (UN -2 to +6 seconds per day, while COSC is -4 to +6 seconds per day).

The automatic UN-118 is completely designed and manufactured in-house and integrates the latest technologies developed by the brand. Its anchor escapement is manufactured by Sigatec (a joint venture between Ulysse Nardin and Mimotec) and features DIAMonSIL high-precision components (escape wheel and lever). DIAMonSIL is silicon covered with synthetic diamonds, a technology that allows components to be styled specifically for avant-garde concepts. Among other advantages, it requires no lubrication and significantly increases durability. The oscillator is located under a full balance bridge with a variable inertia balance wheel, adjustable via 4 screws and a silicon balance spring. replica Greubel Forsey GMT watches
